Happy Presidents' Day!
How One President’s Day Became Presidents’ Day
The United States began celebrating its first president when he was still a general. Nearly 300 years since George Washington’s birth, the holiday has morphed into a celebration of the presidency.
George Washington was not a huge fan of celebrating his birthday.
A diary entry on his 28th birthday reveals a busy day installing a fence around the peach orchard at Mount Vernon, his home in Virginia.
As Alexis Coe, a presidential historian and Washington biographer, put it, “He would be more apt to chronicle the weather on his birthday than any present he received — unless it was a mule.”
George Washington, the first President of the United States, was born on February 22, 1732. For many years, his birthday was celebrated on this exact date.
In 1879, Presidents’ Day became an official federal holiday, specifically honoring George Washington. However, it wasn’t until 1970 that the Uniform Monday Holiday Act shifted the celebration to the third Monday in February, granting federal employees a three-day weekend.
Over time, the day evolved to encompass more than just Washington. It now serves as a tribute to all U.S. presidents, recognizing their contributions, challenges, and legacies.
Presidents’ Day provides an opportunity to reflect on the leadership qualities that have guided our nation through triumphs and trials.
Abraham Lincoln, another iconic president, shares the spotlight with Washington. His unwavering commitment to preserving the Union during the American Civil War and his pivotal role in abolishing slavery resonate deeply.
We also honor other presidents who have left indelible marks on American history. From Thomas Jefferson to Franklin D. Roosevelt, each leader has shaped our nation’s destiny.
As we enjoy this long weekend, let’s remember the vision, courage, and dedication of our presidents. Whether you’re exploring history, snagging a great deal, or simply spending time with loved ones, Presidents’ Day invites us to honor the past while looking toward a brighter future.
